What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and combat sport known for its emphasis on kicking techniques, hand strikes and jumps. The name "Taekwondo" translates to:

  • Tae (태) = foot or kick

  • Kwon (권) = fist or punch

  • Do (도) = way or discipline

So, Taekwondo translates to, "the way of the foot and fist."  It is a comprehensive dynamic discipline focused on physical fitness, self-defense, and personal growth. 

Taekwondo in NSW

Established over 40 years ago,  Australian Taekwondo NSW (ATNSW) is the official State Member Body representing Taekwondo in New South Wales. Operating as the state arm of Australian Taekwondo, the national governing body, ATNSW plays a critical role in the development, regulation, and promotion of Taekwondo across the state.

Commonly referred to as "NSW Taekwondo", the organization leads Taekwondo’s growth in NSW by supporting affiliated clubs, delivering sanctioned competitions, and providing pathways for athletes, coaches, and officials from grassroots to elite levels.

ATNSW is a not-for-profit, member-based organization committed to promoting the sport and martial art of Taekwondo across New South Wales. It upholds principles of integrity, safety, inclusivity, and excellence, working closely with the national body to implement best-practice governance and sport development frameworks.
